Techniques: The Fascia Mounted Turnout Control

As the SJ&T has evolved, so has our* vision of the ideal turnout control.

Desirable qualities:

  • Intuitive use.
  • Tactile feedback that you have activated the turnout.
  • Visual feedback of turnout position / indication of track route.
  • Remember turnout state even during power loss.
  • No sharp edges or protrusions to catch on clothing or jewelry or cause injury.
  • Easy installation.
  • Workable during nighttime operation as well as daytime operation.
  • Flexibility in power source.
  • Reasonable cost.

Here is our solution:

Fascia Mounted Turnout Control, with mainline selected. Fascia Mounted Turnout Control, with siding selected.

Installation is simple:

  1. Drill a small hole (1/4 inch is sufficient) in the fascia to accomodate the four wires.
  2. Remove lining from the permanent self-adhesive back of the control
  3. Insert the four wires through the hole in the fascia
  4. Push the control firmly onto the fascia.
  5. Wire the two power leads to a 9 to 27 volt DC or AC power source. (Or a DCC track.)
  6. Wire the other two leads to the stall motor switch machine.

We thought other modellers might be interested in our solution, and have prepared to make the controls available at an attractive introductory price. They will be available in multiple turnout orientations, including crossover.

The controls are available in a variety of routing patterns. Examples:

Available standard control routing patterns.

We can also provide controls customized to show route destinations, as in this example:
